August Member of the Month-Katy K.

This month's member of the month is Katy K! Katy exemplifies everything that we hold true to our members; an outstanding work ethic, positive mind-set, and the ability to bring out the best in the other people around her. Every time Katy steps foot in to the training center, I know that she has shut out everything outside of the room for an hour, and she is ready to attack her training. I find great joy in seeing former high school and college athletes, reclaim their inner athlete at K.Shan Performance. Awesome job Katy!

Throughout your lifetime, how long have you been working out for and what do you enjoy most about fitness?

I was a two sport athlete (basketball and softball) in high school and college. During those years I worked out a lot. Since graduating from college 12 years ago, I’ve continued to play recreational sports but haven’t focused nearly as much on working out and fitness, until coming to K.Shan five months ago. The thing I enjoy most about fitness is seeing the results I see in other aspects of my life. I’m driving the golf ball as far as I ever have, I’m producing more extra base hits playing softball, I’m jumping higher in volleyball and I generally just have more strength and energy.

Since training at K.Shan Performance, what have you learned the most about fitness as well as about yourself?

I’ve learned that fitness isn’t just about the time you spend in the gym. The amount of energy you have and the way you feel is dependent on many factors including nutrition, hydration and sleep. In order to maximize your potential and feel your best, you need to account for all those things. My best workouts come when I’m well-hydrated, well-rested and am eating the right things.

I read a quote that said “Your body is capable of almost anything, it’s your mind you have to convince.” I think what I’ve learned about myself through this program is the accuracy of that quote and the importance of mental strength. I’ve learned that if I turn off the self-doubt and negative thoughts and replace them with positive thoughts and an attitude that says “I can do anything,” I’ll reach my goals. I now know that even if I fail today, if I work hard and keep at it, I’ll succeed eventually.

What do you like most about the workouts? And what is your favorite exercise?

The thing I like most about the workouts is the team atmosphere. I love cheering on other members as they reach for and achieve their goals and it is amazing to hear them cheer me on as I reach for and achieve mine. Everyone is truly invested in each other’s success and that is one of the big reasons I love this program. I also really like the fact that Kyle is so focused on proper technique and goes out of his way to explain the exercises each time we do them to ensure everyone has proper form and technique. My favorite exercises are odd object carries (especially with the heavy bag), hex bar carries, croc walks and of course box jumps!

What would you recommend to someone looking to start training?

First, don’t be afraid to step out of your comfort zone and try new things. The only way to change your life is to take action and try. Second, remember that you are capable of so much more than you think you are. Turn off the negativity and self-doubt and turn on the positivity in your mind. You truly can do anything you set your mind to. Finally, you are going to have good days and you are going to have difficult days. Feed off the energy of those good days and push through the difficult days. Never, ever give up on yourself.
