May Member(s) of the Month-The Miller Family

Congratulations to our May Member(s) of the month, The Miller Family. Kelsey and Caitlin joined up with us over a year ago and have been hitting the ground running ever since. Both sisters continue to push themselves and gain strength as we retest our challenge weeks every 3 months, as they always find themselves towards the top of the rankings. Kelsey and Caitlin's success motivated both their mom and dad to step foot in to the fitness center, and they both have done an outstanding job. Jane lost 8 lbs of body fat with her readings at the doctor, and Dave is crushing the workouts taking him back to his high school athlete days! Awesome job to the Miller Family we commend your work ethic and passion towards living a healthier life!

Throughout your lifetime, how long have you been working out for a what do you enjoy most about fitness?

Dave: quite a bit in the 90’s and early 2000’s, mostly weight training. Very sporadic/inconsistent in the past 10-12 years because of work and just busy with other stuff like keeping up with a house, 2 girls, etc. Feels good to get back in better shape again and get that endorphin fix.

Jane: I have been working out consistently since Feburary 2018 when I became a member here at K.Shan. My favorite part about fitness is seeing the results of my hard work. I have lost 8 pounds of body fat since starting and it has been very rewarding!

Caitlin: I grew up as an athlete and played college basketball so I've been working out as long as I can remember. What I love most about fitness and working out is how it makes me feel -- not only is it great for your body and overall health, it's good for the mind!

Kelsey: I have been consistently working out since 2006 when I was a freshman in high school. At the end of my freshman year I decided to try out some track and field events and discovered that I enjoyed running. I signed up for the fall cross country team and trained throughout the summer to build a running base. I’ve maintained my fitness with running since that time, but it wasn’t until May 2017 that I started to consistently incorporating weight training into my fitness program through the adult fitness classes at K.Shan. I love the way my body and mind feels after a workout. I feel physically strong and mentally relaxed after working out. To me, it is the ultimate stress reliever.

Since training at K.Shan Performance, what have to learned the most about fitness as well as about yourself?

Dave: being in shape feels better than not being in shape. I learned there are some things that I can no longer out-do my daughters on. Took a little time to come to grips with that.

Jane: I’ve learned of the importance of using good form…it helps you get the most out of each exercise. You get out what you put in!

Caitlin:You are capable of a lot more than you believe you are. Even though I'm an athlete when I started at K. Shan in May 2017 there were a bunch of exercises I struggled with. Now, a year later, I am stronger than I think I've ever been.

Kelsey: Regarding fitness, I have learned the cardio, weight training, and flexibility exercises are all equally important when it comes to being in shape. Prior to my workouts at K.Shan, I solely focused on cardio and am thrilled with how much stronger (physically and mentally) I have become by creating a balance among these three areas of fitness. Regarding myself, I have learned that with hard work and a sense of focus and consistency, I can accomplish anything I set my mind to.

What do you like most about the workouts? And what is your favorite exercise?

Dave: variety of people, meeting new people and the group setting workouts. Everyone encourages each other. Upper body exercises are my favorite because they’re “kinder” to my right knee.

Jane: The creativity and variety of exercises we perform. My favorite exercise (a toss up!) is either a lateral band walk (firewalkers) or med ball partner throws

Caitlin: They're so fun! KSP is so much more than "just another gym" -- all of the members are so kind, everyone encourages and pushes each other, and every workout is like hanging out with a bunch of friends for an hour.My favorite exercise is either KB touches or med ball overhead throws.

Kelsey: The kind, supportive, and motivating team environment of the gym is my favorite part of the workouts. I truly look forward to coming to the gym every day to workout with and see my friends! As for my favorite exercise, I love all things that require squats!

What would you recommend to someone looking to start training?

Dave: just get started and stick with it.

Jane: Don’t over think it. Just show up and do it. Tell yourself, that “Yes you can!”

Caitlin: Just start. Stop waiting for next week, next month, next year. It's way too easy to come up with excuses -- too busy, too tired, not enough time, bad weather, kid's schedules, etc. but self-care is so important for long-term health. Start small and slowly work up from there -- your future self will thank you!

Kelsey: First, believe in yourself…you can do amazing things! Second, when starting out, actively dedicate time in your daily schedule to working out. Before you know it, coming to the gym will become a habit. Lastly, stay focused and work hard, but be gentle and patient with yourself.
